Startups for news calls for entries from media startups to improve newsroom challenges

Global Editors Network (GEN) in partnership with Journalism.co.uk has opened application for the 6th edition of Startups for News – an international competition hat rewards media start­ups with innovative solutions to newsroom challenges. Every year, in the last 6 years, GEN selects early-stage startups providing innovative products or services to media companies and accelerates their development through exclusive exposure and mentorship.

Participating startups must offer an innovative product or service to newsrooms, they must have been founded no earlier than 2013 and must have received less than €1m in external funding to be eligible for the competition.

Startups for News 1

Selected startups will get recognised by industry leaders and noticed by new partners; have access to senior media executives in intimate settings at the GEN Summit and benefit from their feedback, insights, and connections; and get exposure in the media industry and secure media coverage. The winner of the Startups for News competition will get private mentoring sessions with GEN board members, stand in the prestigious expo at the next GEN Summit and also great exposure to GEN powerful network of media innovators through GEN’s social media channels and an invitation to participate in Slush 2017.

The application period closes 1st of January, after which 16 startups with innovative newsroom solutions will be selected and announced on 2oth of January, 2017. Online pitch battles will then take place between two of the selected startups every week from February – April 2017. Every week, the video presentations of the two startups will be posted on the GEN website, with the public and the jury voting for their favourite startups. 

The Startups for News final takes place at the GEN Summit in June 2017 in Vienna – the eight remaining startups will be invited to pitch on the main stage, and the winner will be awarded by an international jury.
