ENTERPRISE54: MTN has partnered with ten commercial banks in Ghana to foster the growth of mobile money in the West African nation.
The partnership which collaborates with the third edition of its Mobile Money Month is targeting organisations that are more into cash management services – specifically insurance companies, educational institutions and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and micro finance companies.
MTN is the first telecom operator to launch Mobile Money service in Ghana.
Since it launched in 2005, over one million customers have registered with over 6.5 million transactions recorded on a monthly basis.
Mr. Bukari Basintale, General Manager of MTN Northern sector, said “It took years of education to get people to acquire the taste, habit and confidence in the (mobile money) service.”
Basintale said the company is already looking forward to more strategic partnerships with organizations that are more into cash management services.
While MTN seem satisfied with the uptake to date, it says there is still more room for improvement and it will continue to design more relevant services that will suit customer needs.
MTN has already launched Mobile Money in 15 out of its 22 operations and has a customer base of 18 million.
