It’s not everyday we get to peek behind the curtain of an entrepreneur’s daily grind. Recently, Mayowa Ojo, the “mayor” of CakeMayor, took to Twitter to share how a deadline, Lagos traffic and a ruined cake weren’t enough to deny him a happy customer. I was going to prosify the experience, but twitter stories rarely translate well.
So, here it is in all its twitter glory
1. Some1 once told me lightning doesn't strike a place twice. I should've remembered that but I didn't. #CakeMayorDiaries @survivor17
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
2. My bike delivery service once delivered a buttercream cake to Ajah & it got there in excellent condition #CakeMayorDiaries @Gidi_Traffic
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
3. So in a bid to help cut a client's delivery budget I called bike services & not the car service coy to VI. #CakeMayorDiaries @survivor17
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
4. Big mistake. When the bike man called to tell me d cake wasn't looking good I assumed he was exaggerating #CakeMayorDiaries @Gidi_Traffic
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
5. A still, small voice said "Go". Literally. So I changed my plans from going to Ikeja and headed to costain #CakeMayorDiaries @survivor17
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
6. When my staff and I saw the cake we literally put our hands on our heads in typical "mogbe" fashion. #CakeMayorDiaries @Gidi_Traffic
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
*mogbe is yoruba for “I’m done for”
7. My staff kept asking "boss (hate it when she calls me that but hey!) what will we do? Should we head back to the bakery?#CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
8. Bear in mind that this cake was 30mins away from the delivery time we promised; enough time to get back to the bakery #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
9. Problem was there was no "already made" cake in the bakery for replacement plus, I hate failing on timed appointments. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
10. Even if someone in the bakery started to make the cake, it wouldn't be out of the oven in 30mins. So I stood, pensive #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
11. Even if it was ready in that time it would still need time to cool before we decorate & then deliver the cake. Help!!! #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
12. So I channeled my inner Cake Boss and started to rectify this cake. Did I mention the cake had split in two halves😳😳? #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
13. Top layer halved, middle layer slid off the bottom layer and crashed into the box, breaking in several parts. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
14. The cake that left my bakery so simple and elegant now looked like a disaster. #CakeMayorDiaries @survivor17 @Gidi_Traffic @iamdemark
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
15. I pulled some stunts, rectified the cake and saved the day then dismissed the bike man and took delivery upon myself. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
16. At the point of delivery the cake had still cracked open a bit but it was nothing compared to the first heartbreak. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
17. Moral of the story? Don't put buttercream cakes in bike delivery boxes. Also, follow your guts in decision making. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
18. Finally, do a thorough job every time but for the times when things go wrong pat yourself on the back and move on. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
19. While my staff fretted d entire ride to Ikeja from Vi, I smiled knowing I'd baked a really good cake & done my best. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
20. Guess what? Client buzzed me to tell me they loved the cake and even her mom is now a fan. #CakeMayorDiaries
— Cake Mayor (@CakeMayor) February 2, 2016
Do your best and leave the rest but ensure your best is really good. Develop yourself. Have a great month all. #CakeMayorDiaries
