WimBiz Impact Investment calls for application from start-ups in the recycling industry

The WimBiz Impact Investment Competition, a business plan competition for start-up businesses in the impact investment niche is calling on application from women in the recycling industry to celebrate her 15th anniversary. This year’s competition will equip 5 female owned startup businesses in the recycling industry with the necessary support to ensure their success and sustainability.

WimBiz is an acronym for Women in Management, Business and Public service. Borne out of the desire to elevate the status and influence of women and their contribution to nation building, WimBiz aims to inspire and empower women with high potential to attain leadership positions in business, management and public service.

According to the organization, countries in the global north have seized opportunities to turn waste into a resource that benefits their community and the environment. However, countries in the global south such as Nigeria are lagging behind in this area. According to a World Bank Urban Development Series report, Africa currently produces just about 70 million tons of waste every year. With its rapid urbanization and growing economies, forecasts have shown that waste production in Africa will exceed 160 million tons by the year 2025.

Requirements for participating businesses

  • Must be female-owned and run
  • Must have clearly defined goals and objectives
  • Must be sustainable and profitable
  • Must impact the society
  • Must be in the start-up phase and should not be more than 18 months-old
  • Must be in the recycling industry


  • You must be a citizen of Nigeria
  • You must be a woman between the ages of 21-30
  • Your business must be situated in Nigeria and should have a sustainability component for Nigeria
  • The value of your request should not exceed N500,000
  • The business must be in the start-up phase and should not be more than 18 months old
  • The owner must demonstrate commitment and interest in the business

After going through the applications, the top 3 businesses will share a N1 million cash prize, while the top 10 applicants will be granted scholarships to attend the WimBiz Annual Conference where awards will be presented to them during the closing ceremony of the conference. Finally, they will be assigned mentors on the platform of the WimBiz mentoring program.

Deadline for application for the WimBiz Impact Investment Competition is on Friday, October 21 at 11:00 pm. Applicants will be required to create and upload a 1-3 minute(s) video marketing your unique product and/or service, upload to YouTube and paste the link to your application. Complete the online application form to be part of the competition here.
