Grand Challenges Africa is a project under the African Academy of Sciences – Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AAS-AESA) initiated to provide seed grants for impressive innovations on the continent geared towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 – in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and SDGs 9 – in the promotion and encouragement of research and development. Hence, the call for application from Africa based innovations in these areas.

This opportunity is open to African investigators working in African based domestic organizations and also, non-African investigators with an appointment/affiliation working with any of the 9 Institut Pasteur Institutes in Africa who are resident in Africa with at least 18months left on their tenure of service/affiliation after receiving the award. Also, proposals should promote intra-African collaborations across geography, language, cultures and other divides, such as those that link the 9 Institut Pasteur organisations in Africa with other African institutions.

With $100,000 to be won, the Grand Challenges Africa (GC Africa) was implemented in partnership with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD Agency) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

Application for Grand Challenges Africa closes on February 17, 2017; while selections are made and notifications sent out by June, 2017. The grant making and awards announcement then follows through between July – October, 2017.
