It is no longer news that the keenly contested and long awaited Presidential election between the present Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and billionaire Businessman, Donald Trump is over with the later pulling off a stunning upset.
Looking at how far the U.S President-elect, Mr Donald Trump has come after going through months of an intense campaign schedule characterized by several scandals and propaganda, it will not be out of place to highlight some hardcore traits he demonstrated on his way to the white house that entrepreneurs can emulate.
1. Believe and be confident in yourself
Say all you want about him but Donald Trump is one person who is very confident in his abilities and believes in himself. Every time he was given the opportunity, he always made people know that he was a better candidate than his closest rival, Hillary Clinton. As an entrepreneur, you need to have a great deal of confidence and believe in yourself to have any shot at success just like Donald Trump.
2. Turn challenges to stepping stones
For anyone who has plans to be successful in life, you should also have a plan to turn your challenges, difficulties and adversity to a stepping stone for your success. As an entrepreneur, numerous things will be thrown at you but you have to stand your ground and stay on your feet.
For all the scandals, bumps and hiccups Trump had to contend with like Melania’s plagiarized speech, his stand on: illegal immigrants, gun control, gay and LGBT laws, Muslims etc, his campaign only grew stronger through those trying times and he came through unscathed.
3. Remain focused
Donald Trump and his entire campaign team had one agenda in mind: to ensure that the next President of the United States of America was Donald Trump. Any fact, figure or analysis that trumped that aim or goal received little or no attention.
So for all the debates and polls he lost to Madam Secretary, Donald J. Trump and his entire team remain focused and were never in doubt of what they had set out to achieve and they kept going till the very end.
4. Defy the odds
Let it be on record that the victory of Donald Trump means that this would be the first time an American President has never been in the military or held any political office prior to becoming President. This means that he had no political experience whatsoever, was never part of the ruling class and had never operated in that space before, but he defeated some of the masters of American politics.
He is a successful businessman and reality TV star who rose to the white house by appealing to ordinary Americans and convincing them that he is one of them. Nothing complicated! Nothing more!! This is a lesson to entrepreneurs, you can defy the odds and succeed. Facts, figures, predictions don’t have to favour you.
5. The bigwigs don’t have to support you
Trump was not just up against Hillary Clinton. He was up against the bigwigs of American politics like the Clinton, Bush and Obama dynasties; the mainstream media and social media, the big guys of the American entertainment industry, the American institutions and establishments. It was a hard fought battle but guess what, Trump understood who and what he needed to win. He understood the terrain and who he needed to appeal to and whose vote he needed to get to emerge victorious. He understood that he needed to get the votes and not public endorsements from bigwigs.
Every entrepreneur has to understand this, you don’t need to rely on people’s validation to succeed.
6. Be magnanimous in victory
Successful entrepreneurs need to understand this concept very clearly, as there is no need to stir up quarrels or be vindictive. Contrary to what everyone would have expected, Donald was gracious in victory. Asides from thanking his supporters who went out to vote and his campaign team, he also thanked Hillary for proving to be a tough opponent.
Finally, he reached out to her and other Americans who didn’t support him, adding that they all need to work together to make America great again. Doesn’t sound Trump-like right? We understand.
7. Ensure your message/idea resonates with the deepest needs or ideals of the people
Whether Americans admit it or not, Donald Trump during his campaign got the attention of the people and he in turn got their votes at the polling booth. Whether he represents the ideals of the average white American is a debate for another day BUT, clearly, Americans voted for the man whose message resonates perfectly with them.
So dear entrepreneur, ensure your idea/solution meets the deepest needs of your target market.
